"Show and Spell" is the second segment of the second episode of the first season of Sofia the First: Royal Magic, and the third episode overall. It premiered on May 25, 2026 alongside "Abracadazzle".^[1]

Overview

Layla tries a levitation spell but instead reveals her ability to sprout butterfly wings.

Plot

Today is the first day of sorcery class. Layla tells Camila that she doesn't know any spells, although she read spell books over the summer. Sofia tells Layla that their sorcery teacher is the best. Zane wonders who it is, and Cedric shows up, revealing himself to be the teacher. Cedric tells the students that he is also the Royal Sorcerer of Sofia's kingdom, Enchancia. Princess Layla goes to write down the notes while Cedric demonstrates that with a magic spell, students can make wonderous things happen or stop things from happening. Layla assumes Cedric is a great sorcerer. Cedric wants to see what the students already know, so they will have what Cedric calls a show-and-spell with magic. After tea time, the students will come back to class and present their best magic spell.

Later, Layla is nervous to show Cedric a spell before he taught the students one. She doesn't know any spells despite doing lots of enchanted gardening. Camila decides to help as Zane casts a spell to make an apple a cupcake, which Pepper eats. Camila decides on a floating spell, and Layla accepts while wondering what she should float. Sofia asks Pepper if he would like to take a magical ride up in the air, and he accepts on the condition on how many cupcakes are in the air with him.

Outside, Camila demonstrates how the floating spell works. Layla attempts to do the spell but nothing happens. Sofia tells her to take a deep breath and tell the wand what to do. Layla tries again, and it makes Pepper float higher than she expected. Layla wonders what she did wrong and what needs to be done, and Sofia tells her to stay calm. This makes Layla angry, causing Pepper to start falling. Layla goes to save him, but while doing so, she sprouts butterfly wings. After initially enjoying them, Layla flies uncontrollably before landing.

Layla tells the others that her bracelet glowed right before the wings appeared, and they deactivate. Layla reveals that she got the bracelet from her mother after she was crowned queen and Layla became a princess. Sofia recaps how she got her amulet from her dad when she became a princess and tells Layla that she can show her butterfly wings to Cedric. Sofia tells Layla to practice and the others will help her.

Layla has to figure out how to make the wings pop out. She recaps how she got the wings the last time, so she just has to think of flying. Afterwards, Layla sprouts butterfly wings again and voices how the power to fly is perfect to show she's got what it takes while not making any mistakes. Although Layla gets the hang of turning, she doesn't know how to land. Sofia tells Layla to be calm, but Layla is too freaked out and lands in a water fountain. Sofia and Zane catch up with her while Camila has a drying spell ready.

Sofia tells Layla that she just needs to work on the landing. Layla is told to keep it simple by flying up and then going left and right before landing while staying calm. Layla is ready to try again, and although she does the first few steps, she is unable to land and ends up on top of Castle Merryweather. Sofia knows Layla will get it next time. Layla starts to lose hope and wonders how she'll get down. Sofia tells Layla to stay calm by taking a deep breath and think of something that makes her happy, like Pepper.

Layla soon realizes that Pepper makes her happy and takes a deep breath, making her feel happy and calmer. Layla repeats the first few steps and is able to land. Afterwards, she thanks Sofia for the advice on staying calm. Prince Zane suggests Layla do a loop-de-loop next, and she attempts to do so but lands in a bush. As the bells ring, Sofia tells Layla to stay calm and do the moves she knows. At class, Prince Haruki shows the students how to play a trumpet with a wand but he does so off-key. When Sofia is called up, she does the rock-to-ruby spell. When it's Layla's turn, she sprouts the butterfly wings and controls them perfectly, amazing everyone, including Cedric. He wants Layla to do a loop-de-loop, and she is able to do so when she thinks of Sofia, who makes her feel happy. Cedric proclaims Layla's magic the best in class. Layla thanks Cedric and her friends for the help, and they all want to see a little more magic. Layla sprouts the butterfly wings again and flies around the classroom.

Trivia

• Layla unlocks her ability to create magical butterfly wings for the first time.
• It is revealed that Layla received her bracelet from her mother after their family became royalty. This is another common trait she shares with Sofia, as she received her amulet from King Roland after becoming a princess. Also, both jewelry give the holders magical powers.
• Cedric now works as sorcery teacher at Charmswell.
• Sofia uses the "Mutato Rubio" spell, which transforms a rock into a ruby for the show-and-spell. She learned this spell thanks to Cedric's help in the original series' Season 1 episode "Cedric's Apprentice".
• Moral: You can't do anything right if you're distressed, you need to calm down first.
