"Welcome to Charmswell" is the first episode of the first season of Sofia the First: Royal Magic, serving as the series premiere. It premiered on May 25, 2026.^[1]

Overview

On Sofia's first day at royal magic school, she teams up with new friends to win a race and receives a magical visit from Rapunzel.

Plot

The episode starts after the events of Forever Royal with Sofia's family travelling to Charmswell by flying coach. Sofia is in a rush, as she doesn't want to be late. Amber points out that they wouldn't have to rush if Sofia went to Ever Realm Academy with her and James. Sofia says that when Miss Nettle opened the Charmswell School for Royal Magic she knew that this would be the school for her. King Roland calls Sofia "the most magical princess he knows", which makes Amber jealous. Roland saves himself by calling her "the most queenly". He failed to save himself when James puts his face up.

They arrive at Charmswell, where they are greeted by Miss Nettle. She explains that the students are placed in mini castle clubhouses named after Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, based on the color of their backpack. Sofia receives her blue backpack, symbolizing her belonging to Castle Merryweather. While saying goodbye to her family, she voices some insecurities, as she wasn't born a princess. Her family encourages her before they leave. Sofia goes to meet the other students of her Castle. Sofia introduces herself, followed by Prince Zane of Gloomshire and Princess Layla of Mezzouk. Layla immediately asks whether her curtsy was okay and explains that she only became a princess last week after her father became king of Mezzouk. Zane demonstrates the power of his magical mandolin which can influence people's emotions. Suddenly, Princess Camila appears in the air. Sofia runs to catch her as her amulet gives her the power to leap really high. Sofia jumps up, catches Camila and ends up falling on top of Layla and Zane. Camila introduces herself as the Princess of Maralinda. She asks whether she made it to Charmswell. Sofia confirms that she did, to which Camila reacts with relief as her "Here-to-There spell" finally worked. Layla asks how Sofia managed to jump that high, Sofia explains that her amulet likely gave her that power. Prince Devin of Thistlebury walks over to them, He brags about doing magic his whole life. Sofia asks him whether he's in their castle, to which Prince Devin responds that he's in Castle Flora. Then Camila receives her blue backpack, being placed in Castle Merryweather with Sofia, Zane and Layla.

Next, Miss Nettle announces a welcome race. The students would drive pedal-powered coaches around the campus to collect three pieces of their castle flag and hanging it at their castle door. The winner would be allowed to pick their castle pet from a selection of a unicorn, a griffin and a dragon. Zane really wants the unicorn, but Devin tells him, Castle Flora will win it. He tells them they don't belong at Charmswell. Sofia disagrees. Zane is worried, as he has never won a race as he is not very fast. Sofia encourages her new friends to try. Their team starts of last. A magical map points them to the first stop, the Magical Creature Corral. They arrive there after the other teams. Inside the other teams are harassed by puppercorns, unable to reach the banner pieces on the loft. Sofia comes up with the idea of using her magic. She reveals her power to talk to animals and talks to Pepper, the puppercorn, who just wants to play and still refuses to let them pass. Camila uses her teleportation spell to get the banner piece form the loft and return to the ground floor and leave.

The map points them to the Enchanted Greenhouse next. Before they can get going, Pepper jumps on top of the carriage, telling Sofia he wants to come along, as he is happy to be able to speak with Sofia and wants to have fun. The others agree with him coming along. As they drive to the Greenhouse, they are passed by the other teams again. As they arrive, the other teams are just leaving with their banner pieces. Zane spots the banner piece over a large flower, tries to get it, but gets captured by a Cuddling Crocus. Layla uses her knowledge of Enchanted Gardening and comes up with the idea to free him by using a Moonlily to create bright light, as that's what Cuddling Crocuses love. Sofia tells Layla to water the Moonlily as she plans to jump over the Cuddling Crocus to get the banner piece. Sofia leaps into the air and ends up in a flowerbed. She grabs the banner piece, Layla waters the lily, the Cuddling Crocus drops Zane and Sofia grabs him as she runs back.

As they leave the greenhouse, the map tells them that the final stop is the Royal Ballroom. Just as it is about to show them the path to take, Pepper jumps on the coach again and accidentally destroys the map. Zane hears dance music and tells the others to follow it, as where there's dance music, there's a ballroom. They arrive at the ballroom last. The other teams are struggling to cross the room as they are kept away from the banners by floating enchanted thrones. As Pepper hears that the price for winning is a unicorn, he suggests taking him as a castle pet instead, as he is more fun than a unicorn. Team Castle Merryweather tries to cross the room at the same time but gets pushed back by the magical thrones. Their next attempt fails as well. Devin uses a floatation spell on himself to cross the room to get to his banner, but he has to wait for his teammates who are still struggling. Another attempt by Sofia and Zane to leap over the thrones fails, causing Zane to start believing Devin's claim that they do not belong at Charmswell. Sofia and the others also lose hope. Pepper cheers her up. Sofia rallies her new friends, telling them how their skills had helped them get to this point. They decide to try again to get past the floating thrones. Zane notices that the thrones are dancing and they decide to waltz past them. They manage to grab their last banner piece and make their way back to their carriage.

They pedal back to their castle, but the other students catch up to them. Devin uses his "Floatissimo" spell to overtake the other carriages. Zane finally manages to pedal faster but it's not fast enough. Sofia decides that the fastest person should just take the banner and run. Pepper offers to do it, as puppercorns are fast, but Sofia tells him it has to be a member of the team. So she uses her amulet to transform into a puppercorn, while Layla attaches the banner to her tail. Devin also decided to run with his banner to his castle. As Sofia makes her way to her castle, Devin tries to stop her by summoning a wall, but Sofia just leaps over it, transforms back into her human form and places the banner on Castle Merryweather.

Miss Nettle reveals that Castle Merryweather was slightly faster than Castle Flora, so they get to pick their castle pet. The friends hug, including Pepper. As the time comes to pick their pet, the unicorn makes a snide comment at the idea of them expecting her to play with them. Sofia and the others ask Miss Nettle whether they can pick Pepper as their castle pet. Miss Nettle allows it. Pepper is overjoyed. Castle Flora then picks the unicorn.

As Sofia's friends turn to walk to the castle, Sofia notices something sparkling in the woods. She goes to investigate and finds Princess Rapunzel waiting for her. Rapunzel tells her that she wasn't summoned by the amulet this time, but instead rode on Maximus all the way from Corona in France because she was chosen by the Princess Council to bring Sofia a message. After telling Sofia that Cinderella and Ariel wanted to say hi, Rapunzel then tells her that Cinderella's fairy godmother had a message for her. Sofia has become the most magical princess in the Ever Realm because of the Amulet of Avalor. The more Sofia wears it, the more powers she gets and the more magical she becomes. There are villains who want this power for themselves, so Sofia has to learn to master her powers to protect her friends, her family and the kingdoms. Rapunzel encourages Sofia to learn as much as she can. She then hands her a frying pan for if she ever gets into a difficult situation. Sofia runs back to campus, while Rapunzel lets Maximus take the nap she promised him, and he collapses on top of her.

Sofia meets up with her new friends and she, Layla, Camila, Zane, and Pepper then enter Castle Merryweather for the first time.

Trivia

• This pilot episode has a runtime of 22 minutes, similar to the original series, before the remainder of the season transitions to mostly two 11-minute segments per episode.
• This is the first episode in the franchise not to feature a traditional title card. Beginning in mid-2018, most newly premiered Disney Jr. original series and season premieres of continuing shows have omitted on-screen title cards, although characters still verbally announce the episode title.
• Belle Adams replaces Mandy Moore as the voice of Rapunzel as of this episode.
• Rapunzel reveals that there's a council among the various Disney princesses. She also mentions knowing Ariel, Cinderella, and Cinderella's fairy godmother.
• Amber reveals that James has chosen to attend Ever Realm Academy instead of Chivalry Hall.
• This is the second time Rapunzel appeared in the franchise, the first one was Sofia the First: The Curse of Princess Ivy. Though instead of being summoned by the amulet, she rode Maximus to the Charmswell school from the Kingdom of Corona in France.
  • This, of course, also makes Maximus the second sidekick to appear in the franchise, since Olaf from "The Secret Library: Olaf and the Tale of Miss Nettle" (Third, if you count the Aladdin's Magic Carpet from "Two to Tangu").
• Sofia's amulet gives her a new power, the ability to leap further than normal.
  • Sofia also uses her ability to turn into any animal she sees and wishes to be to turn herself into a puppercorn. She unlocked this ability in the original series' Season 3 episode "Hexley Hall".
• Sofia has a waltz with Zane, Layla, and Camila, similar to how she waltzed with her family in the pilot movie Once Upon a Princess.
• The credits song for this episode is Time to Shine, not the future episodes' song
