Princess Elena is the protagonist in the crossover special, Elena and the Secret of Avalor. She later appears in the spin-off, Elena of Avalor, ruling Avalor as Crown Princess until she comes of age to be named Queen and succeed her parents as Avalor's sovereign. This comes to pass in the series finale at the end of the third season, as Elena finally comes of age to be officially crowned Queen of Avalor, succeeding her deceased parents as the next monarch of the kingdom as the eldest daughter and heiress to the throne per the line of succession.
Personality
Elena appears to be brave, happy-tempered and honest. She learns that is better to be united with others and find a solution, while she wanted to face Shuriki alone before. During her time as Crown Princess, she gains a better understanding of not just her own duties, but having friends and family around to help her when needed to solve problems and deal with threats to the kingdom. This helps her to succeed when she comes of age to be named the new Queen of Avalor, succeeding her late parents as the new sovereign of her kingdom, and having the last several years ruling as Crown Princess as valuable wisdom and experience to build off of as Queen while still having all her surviving family, friends, allies, and citizens around to support her.
Elena and the Secret of Avalor
Elena was fifteen and her parents gave her a special amulet for her birthday, but one year later, Shuriki came from the Northern Isles and invaded Avalor, murdered King Raul and Queen Lucia, and trapped her inside the amulet when Shuriki tried to murder her as well to remove the only witness to her takeover of the Avalor throne so she can claim it unopposed, but the amulet intervened and saved Elena's life, at the cost of trapping her within it, and Alacazar fled Avalor with the amulet in his possession when Shuriki wasn't looking while she continued her takeover until he could find the princess that could free Elena and help her overthrow Shuriki and take back Avalor after ensuring the safety of Elena's little sister and grandparents from Shuriki's wrath while Elena kept Shuriki busy in the meantime. However, time passed, and Alacazar soon grew old and was forced to use what magic he had left to transform into a book, titled "The Lost Princess of Avalor", to be stored in the Secret Library in Enchancia until the princess who could free Elena was finally discovered and came to the library to seek him out. Forty-one years later, Alacazar tells Sofia that she's the princess destined and chosen to free Elena from the Amulet after attaining a sense of oneness with the Amulet from her time wearing it, performing good deeds to be rewarded by the Amulet, and getting advice from the Disney Princesses in her times of distress, but warns her to be very careful when in Avalor to help Elena as Shuriki was still as dangerous as when she first took control over 40 years earlier. Sofia frees Princess Elena from the Amulet, and she defeated Shuriki, breaking her wand in half, thus destroying Shuriki's power, and she learns it is better to be united with her friends, family, and citizens, than trying to face evil on her own, while also gaining a valuable ally in Sofia and her family and their kingdom of Enchancia.
Elena of Avalor
Unknown to Elena, Shuriki was still alive following her defeat and escape after being overthrown by Elena and Sofia, and rejoining her former allies in Victor Delgado and his daughter Carla, Shuriki plans revenge on Elena and reclaiming Avalor from her once more to make sure her second reign as Queen is never ended as there won't be anyone to overthrow her the next time she usurps the throne from Elena and the surviving members of the Avalor Royal Family. In the meantime, Elena was able to handle ruling Avalor as Crown Princess for the next several years until she came of age to officially be crowned Queen of Avalor and succeed her late parents as sovereign, but during that time, she still had to deal with many problems around Avalor caused by other villains or simple ones regarding her family, the citizens, or the Jaquins, such as Isabel's hesitation to visit their parents' memorial on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) due to still missing them very much. She also discovers the power of her Scepter of Light and the strain it takes on the user from overuse if not properly trained and experienced with it, causing her to pass out for two days before recovering after using it to protect Isabel from Orizaba the Moth Fairy, exhausting her in the process until she could get a much-needed rest to recover. Elena is unaware of Shuriki having returned, nor knowing that Carla Delgado is working in disguise to steal her mother's Carnaval Tiara for Shuriki, though was forewarned of a coming darkness she will need to overcome if she is to ever become Queen of Avalor by the Sun Bird spirit Quita Moz when visiting him in the Jaquins' home realm of Vallaestrella. As a result, she continues her reign and helping her family and Avalor until the time comes to face Shuriki again with everything she's learned since their last confrontation, including getting the hang of controlling the Scepter of Light, a magical artifact handed down to her from her late father, King Raul.
After ruling Avalor for over a year, putting her closer to becoming Queen with only a couple more years left before she comes of age to be officially crowned Queen, she soon encounters Shuriki again in the episode "Rise of the Sorceress" in Season 2 of Elena of Avalor, just after performing in the Sunflower Festival with Isabel and Luisa for the first time since her parents were murdered by Shuriki, horrified to find herself face-to-face with her sworn arch-enemy again, alongside Avalor's other enemies in the Malvago wizard Fiero, Alacazar's arch-enemy, and the Delgados. Although Shuriki tries to take advantage of the situation and opportunity before her and strike down Elena again, taunting her that she doesn't have the Amulet of Avalor to protect her now, Elena is quickly armed with her Scepter of Light and turns the tables on Shuriki. Though Elena manages to destroy Shuriki's new wand and send her party fleeing into the woods before losing them during the follow-up pursuit on horseback when they reach where the path splits into multiple routes so they can't tell which one Shuriki's group took, Elena realizes that if she doesn't defeat Shuriki once and for all, she will never become Queen of Avalor, marking this as her test forewarned of by Quita Moz. This is made even more important when she learns alongside Mateo and her Captain of the Royal Guard, Gabe, of a dark counterpart to the Scepter of Light, the Scepter of Night, that Shuriki could use against her if she doesn't find it first and either secures it, or destroys it, to protect Avalor from Shuriki when she makes her move to usurp the throne once more, this time from Elena, before she can become Queen and succeed her late parents, and put Avalor back under Shuriki's iron fist that it suffered through for over 40 years before Elena took it back after Shuriki murdered Raul and Lucia.
Thanks to riddles left behind by Alacazar before he fled Avalor with Elena and the Amulet during Shuriki's original takeover and found his way to Enchancia and the Secret Library to seek out Sofia to get her help to free Elena and Avalor, Elena sets off to find the pieces to the Scepter of Night to ensure Shuriki and her team do not get hold of it first to use against Avalor, even when her Grand Council had forbidden her from leaving the royal palace with Shuriki still out there and at large as a wanted fugitive. After a fight with Shuriki's crew, she gains possession of the first piece before planning on going after the second with her friends, including Mateo, Naomi, Gabe, and the Jaquins so the scepter cannot be used against her by Shuriki.
Unfortunately, blinded by her thirst for revenge for her parents' deaths by Shuriki's hands and the trauma whenever she recalled the moment Shuriki killed them, Elena allows Shuriki to acquire all three pieces of the Scepter of Night, but sets off to begin training to learn the full power of her Scepter of Light so she'll be able to use it to its maximum potential when she confronts Shuriki again to prevent her from taking over Avalor a second time and avenge her parents once and for all. However, Elena nearly ruins her chances when she interrupts her training to go after Shuriki again after seeing her through the Scepter of Light's Farsight ability, only to put Isabel in danger in the process. After that, with Isabel's support, Elena returns to her training for the final confrontation with Shuriki.
She later escorts Isabel as she starts her weekly classes at the Avalor Science Academy, and helps her deal with a rival student that tried to sabotage Isabel's efforts to impress Professor Ochoa and convince Isabel to quit the Academy. Elena is later satisfied when the student exposes himself for his sabotage and is suspended by Ochoa. She also restores the All Kingdoms Fair so Avalor citizens and those from around the Ever Realm, such as Enchancia, can sell their merchandise right there in Avalor, while also helping Armando overcome his frustration with being teased by his brother and help his mother sell much of her merchandise during the All Kingdoms Fair as well.
Elena is able to finally defeat Shuriki when she arrives to take out Elena at her summer palace in Nueva Vista when Elena heads there for vacation with the rest of her family, though the jewel from the Scepter of Night still escapes with Cruz, but as far as Elena is concerned, her parents' deaths have finally been avenged, and Shuriki is gone for good, while Fiero is petrified again by Mateo, and the Delgados escape with their Jaquin allies with what's left of Shuriki's Scepter of Night. Elena also sees to the incarceration of her traitorous cousin Duke Cristobal, who had betrayed both his family and Avalor for gold and greed by allying with Shuriki.
Afterwards, Elena sets about with forging a new alliance with the Sirenas, the merpeople of Avalor, and despite those on both sides who are against it and try to disrupt it, such as Naomi because of a personal grievance against the Sirenas regarding her grandfather, the treaty is successfully signed, and a new alliance is formed from it. The Sirenas later help Elena and her grandfather retrieve an artifact that he thought lost after losing it and his friends at sea due to his own fault. Elena also had to contend with facing Orizaba again when Zuzo was kidnapped and held hostage by her, getting support from some of the other spirit animals to aid her in saving him, while also convincing Cacahuate and Bobo to put their fighting behind them and become friends after she is taken captive by Orizaba as well.
She then celebrates another Navidad back in Avalor City alongside her family and those of Mateo and Naomi as well, despite a blizzard conjured by the Delgados to allow them a chance to escape capture causing them some problems, considering this Navidad a relief from the past year dealing with Shuriki and all her allies before Elena finally killed her and sent the Delgados and their Jaquin allies into hiding, but aware that they could be captured at any moment.
She later has another summit in Nueva Vista so she can show the other kings of the Ever Realm that the Sirenas are allies now and no longer need to be feared as they were in the past with sinking ships with their songs. Despite some problems with Marzel representing his father and the Sirenas after King Pescoro injured himself, Elena is able to prove to the other kings that the Sirenas have changed for the better, and relations between the other kingdoms and the Sirenas improves greatly. Elena continues to ensure things go smoothly in both Avalor City and Nueva Vista, even granting Mateo his own quarters as Royal Wizard in the palace back in Avalor City, despite some problems regarding Mateo's mother Rafa letting him be on his own because he was all grown up and she still deeply cared for him and wasn't ready to part with him yet until finally convinced by Mateo's heroism saving Elena and Avalor City from a creature accidentally released from the Codex Maru.
However, later on, Elena discovers her Scepter of Light has been damaged from the attack it sustained by Shuriki during their final confrontation in Nueva Vista, and decides to take it to Quita Moz for repairs. However, he has to take it to the other Sun Birds in order for it to be properly mended so Elena can use it again, leaving Elena to discover that she does not need to rely on the Scepter anymore with defending Avalor after helping the Jaquins save their home from a fire imp accidentally released from Quita Moz's lair by Cruz and Vestia, who help recapture it and are pardoned by King Verago from their crimes that they had committed in the past, either before or during their time allied with Shuriki. Unfortunately, Elena soon learns from Quita Moz that the test to become Queen of Avalor was not passed when she defeated Shuriki for good. The test still looms ahead of her, but she is assured that all her friends, family, and allies will be there to help her when that time comes.
She soon learns of her next big test to become Queen when she finally meets Victor's wife and Carla's mother, the powerful malvago wizard Ash Delgado, as the Delgado family prepare to try and take Avalor for themselves, using the recovered Jewel from the Scepter of Night that Victor and Carla salvaged earlier after Elena killed Shuriki in Nueva Vista. Elena is nearly killed by Ash through the Jewel as Ash uses it to drain the magic within Elena from her time in the Amulet of Avalor out of her, but is saved by Naomi, reunited with the Scepter of Light, repaired by the Sun Birds, while Mateo destroys the Scepter of Night's Jewel, and Esteban arrests Victor as well, leaving Ash and Carla to escape to vow revenge. However, knowing how strong Ash and Carla are now, Elena realizes she has a major obstacle to deal with now before she can become Queen.
However, she soon gets additional help from her younger sister Isabel, who is able to join Elena's group thanks to having graduated from college, and while Elena is initially against it, after Isabel's inventions save her life, Elena changes her mind and agrees to have her be a part of the group. Later, Elena meets up with the Sun Birds to retrieve the restored Scepter of Light, but soon has to help save the Sun Bird Hool when it is discovered Hool used too much of her life force to help dispel Shuriki's damage to the Scepter. In the process, she also manages to arrest Carla when she tried to bust her father Victor out of prison while Ash dealt with the means to beat Elena in the future.
She then deals with the Feast of Friendship, having to deal with the annoying king that she had previously told off, who had been invited by Esteban and Dona Paloma to try and ruin the ceremony out of jealousy and greed. However, when everyone is shrunk to doll size by the magic in the temple where the feast was being held, and are threatened by a crayfish, Esteban and Paloma confess to their actions, Mateo rescues and restores everyone, and the feast continues without further problems. However, Elena later has to deal with the king again when he threatens to ruin Family Day in a neighboring kingdom due to the queen of that kingdom damaging his boat. Though she still hates Esteban for his part in trying to ruin the Feast of Friendship, he makes it up to her by providing a book from King Raul to help Elena mediate peace between the two sovereigns, despite their quarreling, and the Family Day celebrations continue without further problems.
Carnaval soon rolls around again, but when Elena attempts to stop Ash Delgado from becoming stronger via the Well of Crystals, which was filled with crystals sent to Avalor from the Mystic Isles, and also the source of the Amulet of Avalor and Scepter of Light's magical abilities, she ends up being supercharged with magic that reacts to her emotions and also causes her dress to become enchanted to change color based on her emotion at the time, and supercharge the Scepter of Light so it no longer sapped her energy from overusing it and exhausting her in the process, while also capturing Ash, allowing her to lock Ash up with Victor and Carla so all the Delgados are finally imprisoned. However, Elena finally learns of Esteban's betrayal with allying with Shuriki during her original takeover thanks to a new ability of the Scepter of Light upon noticing his anxiety over where he was the day her parents were murdered, which was also Carnaval Day, and furious at learning the truth that led to the death of her parents over 40 years ago, along with Avalor suffering under Shuriki for over four decades before Elena took back the throne, Elena has Esteban imprisoned as punishment, before a vote cast by her and her Grand Council sees Esteban exiled from Avalor for his betrayal, along with being stripped of his position as Chancellor for effectively committing treason against his own family and Avalor, with Naomi and Luisa siding with Elena while Francisco was willing to forgive his grandson. However, Esteban helps the Delgados escape, but when Ash turns on Victor and Carla and petrifies Victor, Carla surrenders to Elena while Esteban escapes with Ash. After learning what happened from a repentant Carla, Elena has her taken back to be imprisoned again with her petrified father while she and her family return to the Carnaval, but knows she'll have to deal with Ash and Esteban soon with them on the loose again, still deeply upset and hurt over Esteban's part in Shuriki's takeover that led to the deaths of her and Isabel's mother and father.
Elena then celebrates the Day of the Dead again, along with revealing her powers that only work on Día de los Muertos to Isabel, before meeting up with her childhood friend Felicia, and helping stop a rogue chanul named Sanza and a spirit named Guillermo from ruining the festivities and closing the portal between the Human and Spirit Worlds.
She later assigns Mateo as the new Captain of the Royal Guard in order to better face off with Ash and Esteban with training the troops in magic, but later reassigns Gabe back to the position with Mateo as his lieutenant so they can work together to counter anything Ash and Esteban try in the future by training the Royal Guards in fighting against magical attacks alongside physical attacks with Gabe as their commanding officer and Mateo as their magic trainer. She and Isabel then help their grandmother Luisa reopen the family chocolate shop, but Elena's anxiety regarding having to take on Esteban's former duties as Chancellor after terminating him from the position after learning of his involvement with Shuriki in her original takeover, alongside her own duties as Crown Princess result in trouble with the visiting royals when her anxiety causes her stronger magic to get into the chocolate, and after realizing her mistake, she and Isabel apologize to Luisa, work with her to fix the problems, and Elena then takes some time off to be with her grandmother. When she encounters Esteban again, now with magic himself from training with Ash, despite his best attempts to apologize and plead for a chance to set things right, Elena finally tells Esteban he is no longer a part of the Royal Family of Avalor, disowning him as her cousin. This move convinces Esteban to fully turn to evil and join Ash with her plans to take Avalor for herself. Elena then helps Gabe with bolstering the Royal Guard with fresh recruits to deal with pirate problems in Avalor Harbor.
Later, she and Mateo decide to contact Sofia and ask that she send The Lost Princess of Avalor back to them so Mateo can help his grandfather. Sofia agrees and sends the book home to them in Avalor, but when Alacazar reunites with Mateo and Elena, he reveals that the spell he used to become the book is wearing off, and when the book disintegrates, he'll die and ascend to the Spirit World. Mateo is able to save him, but Alacazar later sacrifices himself to protect his grandson from Esteban and Ash, allowing Elena and Mateo a chance to recover Elena's Scepter of Light from them while the villains retreat to concoct a new plan.
Elena ends up falling victim to being entranced by a thief named Tito who uses his guitar against his enemies to allow him to use them to commit crimes, such as having Elena rob her own Royal Treasury, but thanks to Isabel and her friends, the thief's guitar is broken and Elena is freed from the spell, but Francisco then takes the guitar to mend it, much to Elena and Isabel's horror.
Elena later finds Naomi focuses more on spending time with her old friend Veronica than helping Elena as a member of her Grand Council with dealing with all the leftover paperwork from Esteban's time as Chancellor. After Elena and Mateo are captured by a Laughing Goblin summoned by the dangerous Chatana, Naomi comes to save them, but Elena chews her out before going after the goblin herself. However, it is only when Naomi returns that the goblin is captured and subdued. Afterwards, Naomi tells Elena she is resigning from the Grand Council to pursue her dream, and Elena, having made amends with Naomi for earlier, accepts it, providing a ship for Naomi to fulfill her request, and Naomi sets sail for wherever the wind and sea takes her from Avalor.
Elena is later able to rescue the royal family of the Kingdom of Galonia, who were on their way home to celebrate Hanukkah when their ship sank. Elena helps them with preparing for and celebrating Hanukkah with her own family, allowing her family to learn many of the Hanukkah traditions in the process to compliment Navidad.
Naomi later returns from her sea travels she left on previously to warn Elena of Ash's plans to recruit powerful magic villains to her group to aid her and Esteban, and they head to Vallaestrella when it is reported that Ash is there. However, during a battle against one of Ash's new allies that decided to go it alone and not team up with Ash and Esteban, Elena breaks her arm, and when Naomi explains why she left in the first place, Elena scolds her for putting her own needs above that of Avalor, and after making amends, Elena and Naomi work with Gabe, Mateo, and the Jaquins to capture the threat. Afterwards, Naomi decides to stay in Avalor, and Elena welcomes her back with open arms.
However, Elena's injury to her arm from dealing with Kizin due to Naomi's good intentions when she came back to Avalor would linger for some time, leaving her partially incapacitated until she recovered fully. This doesn't prevent her from helping Isabel and Tomiko with repairing the observatory telescope after it is damaged from a storm so Francisco can see a rare comet, despite Elena having some self-doubt about it due to her injured state and letting her magic run rampant by accident during the repairs, forcing Isabel and Tomiko to help her out, but in the end, they get the job done so Francisco could see the comet.
She later asks Mateo to aid Gabe in training the best of the Royal Guards to use magic in preparation for dealing with Ash and Esteban the next time they attack Avalor after Gabe suggests the idea, but Mateo asks her to retrieve a critical ingredient he needs to make more tamberitias to supply the Royal Guards with as his original stockpile was destroyed previously. Elena grants his wish, but she and Naomi soon learn that one of the high-ranking members of Avalor's businesses, Dona Paloma, wanted to take Esteban's former position as Chancellor after Elena stripped him of the position, but forgives her for trying to rush things to help Mateo in order to claim the position. Elena and Naomi return safely to Avalor with what Mateo needed, unaware of what happened with Gabe and the Royal Guards while they were gone that Mateo fixed before they discovered it.
Elena then later attempts to help Armando win the affection of his crush Marlena, but an attempt to help him sing better with magic backfires, and is only reversed when Armando sings from his heart to allow the counter-potion Mateo made to be effective. In the end, Marlena asks Armando to be her sweetheart for the celebration and he agrees.
Finally, Elena deals with Carla and Victor. After restoring Victor to flesh and blood, she offers the two a compromise: Help her with aiding an ancient Maruvian warrior in need of freeing from their imprisonment, and she will pardon them from all their crimes they committed while allied with Shuriki, Fiero, and Ash, and allow them to become good wizards from being Malvagos. Agreeing to the offer, Victor and Carla help Elena, but because of her distrust of them due to their past actions, they are all swallowed by the sea creature that guarded the Maruvian warrior, Ixlan the Lightning Warrior. When Carla calls Elena out on this after Victor tried to get them out and failed, she confesses to her distrust of them clouding her judgement, but upon being reminded by Naomi of Quita Moz's wise, sagely advice about trust, even with former enemies, she agrees to put her distrust behind her and trust Victor and Carla to free them from the creature as the first sign of redemption between them. When Victor and Carla succeed at freeing everyone from the guardian, they are pardoned for their past transgressions, and true to her words, being allowed to train as good wizards instead of Malvagos now that they officially disowned Ash as wife and mother respectively after seeing what her lust for being the strongest Malvago around did to their familia. Elena's arm also fully heals from the injury sustained back when Naomi returned to Avalor.
Later, Elena calls on her late mother Lucia for help when Luisa begins to have doubts about her parenting skills as matriarch of the family.
After that, Elena and Isabel are summoned to see Quita Moz in Vallaestrella, where he tells Elena her test to become Queen has finally come, plus he was shown a vision of Isabel on the throne by the sacred fire, indicating a bad omen regarding Elena if she doesn't survive her test to become Queen. When Isabel voices her concern about the vision, Quita Moz sends the Royal Sisters to locate the Heart of the Jaguar to help Isabel out. When they are navigating the maze to find the Crown Jewel that they need to trade for the Heart, Elena falls victim to one of the traps and is turned into a baby Jaquin. This works out for Isabel with recovering the Crown Jewel, but upon presenting it to the Jaguar King, he refuses to trade it to turn Elena back, and traps Isabel in her Exergroomer. When Isabel escapes with the support of her school hamsters, Peaches and Paco, and then stands up to the Jaguar King and demands he turn Elena back to normal, showing great confidence as she does so, impressed with her courage, he accepts the trade, returns Elena to normal, and the sisters return to Quita Moz, who reveals that the Heart of the Jaguar was inside Isabel all along. She just needed to believe in herself to find her inner courage so if Elena is unable to defend Avalor, Isabel can in her stead.
As the day of her coronation as Queen grows closer, Elena begins to have doubts about it. Zuzo helps by allowing her a chance to dream of what life in Avalor would be like if she wasn't becoming Queen. In the dream, Elena is horrified to find that Esteban, since he remained Chancellor, has become King with Dona Paloma as his wife and Queen. After an attempt to help Mateo and Gabe fails as the winners bribed Esteban to name them the winners, Elena confronts Esteban, but is thrown in the dungeon to keep her out of the way. Naomi, Mateo, and Gabe break her out, and Elena soon rallies the people of Avalor to rise up against Esteban and overthrow him. When the dream ends and Elena wakes up, she realizes what life would be like if she hadn't been born as royalty, thanks Zuzo for the help, and heads back to the palace to prepare for her coronation.
However, as the day of her coronation arrives so she can succeed her parents as the next ruling sovereign of the kingdom, she's summoned to deal with Ash and Esteban when they make their move and threaten Nueva Vista and Coronado, including Marisa, Marzel, Pescoro, Camila, and the rest of the Sirenas, resulting in her and Ash being dragged into the Spirit World while Esteban gains the support of the Four Shades of Awesome to lay siege to Avalor so he can claim the throne, mainly thanks to Elena wanting to deal with him instead of Ash because of personal revenge for his original alliance with Shuriki, allowing Ash to open the portal to summon the Shades through uninterrupted. Elena is able to get help from her late parents and Zuzo with facing Ash and her allies in an Olaball game that is overseen by the Grand Macaw and witnessed by many spirits, including Shuriki and Alacazar. During the match, noticing Elena getting frustrated, Raul and Lucia call a timeout and confront their eldest daughter on her anger getting the better of her. After Elena explains how she wants revenge on Esteban, Raul and Lucia tell her getting revenge won't bring them back from the dead and only leads to bad decisions before explaining that their deaths were the result of Raul stopping Shuriki from conquering Avalor's neighbors when he was still alive and in power, so she turned her attention to Avalor in retaliation to ensure a second attempt to attack Avalor's allies would not be interrupted by them. Esteban tried to warn Raul of this, but he didn't listen, leading to Esteban siding with Shuriki in the hopes of protecting them, but she reneged on the deal and murdered them anyway as originally intended, ensuring she could turn her attention back to Avalor's allies and attack them again without interference with Raul and Lucia out of the way for good and Avalor under her iron fist. Hearing that, and how her parents already forgave Esteban for what happened, Elena begins to reconsider her anger towards Esteban, calms down, thanks her parents for their wise advice, and focuses back on the Olaball game, but when Ash wins, she learns she must stay in the Spirit World indefinitely while Elena is returned to Avalor, as Elena had figured out the meaning in the Grand Macaw's earlier words, and lost the game on purpose so she would be the one sent home and not Ash, ensuring the dark malvago sorceress remained imprisoned in the Spirit World for the foreseeable future. Elena shares one last goodbye with her parents before she returns home to Avalor, now with her mind no longer clouded by anger at Esteban.
She soon learns from Quita Moz, King Verago, and the other residents of Vallaestrella of the Four Shades and Esteban attacking Avalor, and returns at once. Isabel and the other allies Elena befriended over the years, including the Jaquins, Sirenas, and Ixlan, were able to defeat one Shade in Hetz by turning his own lightning powers against him, but the other three overwhelm their defenses, until Elena returns and defeats two more Shades in Yolo and Vuli, but the last one, Cahu the Time Shade, proves to be the most powerful and dangerous of them, having managed to turn Francisco, Luisa, Gabe, Mateo, Armando, and many more citizens of Avalor into stone tablets thanks to her powers over time, while other citizens and Elena's allies were turned into other things, like animals, by the other Shades before they were banished back to the Spirit World. When she attempts to turn Elena to stone like all her other victims, Esteban, despite the bad blood between him and Elena after she learned of his part in Shuriki's takeover and disowned him, takes the bullet for his cousin, apologizing to her for all his actions against her with his last words before turning to stone completely. This devastates Elena deeply, and in her grief and heartbreak, taking her parents' advice to heart, forgives Esteban for everything he did against her and Avalor, causing her magic to restore Esteban to flesh and blood as she unlocks a new power in her dress and magic due to her emotional display of forgiveness. Together, the cousins destroy Cahu's hourglass, taking away her powers, and banish her back to the Spirit World with the other Shades. With the Shades gone, their chaos over Avalor is undone by Elena's magic awoken when she forgave Esteban, and everything is returned to normal in short order. Quita Moz then explains to Elena that forgiving Esteban was the test he forewarned her of when she first met him, which she has passed successfully. Shortly thereafter, Elena finally has her coronation as Queen, but just as Francisco is about to crown her, a fanfare interrupts, but causes her to be overjoyed to see the final guests to her coronation had made it just in time: The Royal Family of Enchancia, with Sofia, Amber, and James having grown considerably since they and their parents helped Elena reclaim the Avalor throne from Shuriki several years ago as they were now teenagers, and both handsome and pretty ones to boot. With Sofia and her family joining Elena's family, Mateo, Rafa, Gabe, Naomi, Quita Moz, Marisa, Marzel, Armando, the Jaquins, and many others in attendance, Elena is crowned Queen of Avalor by her grandfather. After rewarding Naomi, Gabe, Mateo, and Isabel with promoting them to Chancellor, General, Master Wizard, and Royal Inventor respectively, with Isabel the new Crown Princess now that Elena was Queen as second daughter to Raul and Lucia and thus succeeding heiress to the throne after Elena, Elena celebrates her first dance as Queen, even sharing a dance with Sofia as another sign of thanks since it was Sofia who allowed Elena to become Queen in the first place when she originally freed Elena from the Amulet and helped her reclaim Avalor from Shuriki.
Appearance
Like in the image, she has brown hair and eyes and she often wears a red dress. During the third season, her dress becomes enchanted to change colors based on her emotions.

Elena debuted in the Walt Disney World Resort's Magic Kingdom on August 11, 2016, being welcomed to the Magic Kingdom by Cinderella and her husband, Prince Charming, in front of Cinderella Castle, the symbol of the Magic Kingdom and Walt Disney World in general. Since then, she has been doing meet-and-greets with Guests at the Princess Fairytale Hall in Fantasyland behind Cinderella Castle with Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Tiana. During colder weather, she'll wear a shawl or caplet and white opera-length gloves like Cinderella, Belle, and Tiana alongside her formal ballgown to keep warm while she interacts with Guests, usually outdoors for parades, performances, and meet-and-greets inside the Princess Fairytale Hall with her accompanying Cast Member escorts/liaisons.

Elena is the first Latina Disney princess. She was trapped inside the amulet for 41 years; due to this, she is chronologically 57 years old, but she didn't age during those years, so she's still 16 years old.
