Princess Isabel is the younger sister of Princess Elena, second daughter to the late King Raul and Queen Lucia, younger granddaughter of Francisco and Luisa, and cousin to Chancellor Esteban. As second Princess of Avalor, she serves as succeeding heiress to the throne when Elena becomes Queen at the end of the series.
Elena and the Secret of Avalor
41 years before the start of the special, Isabel and Elena's parents were murdered by Shuriki, a power-hungry sorceress from the Northern Isles, allowing her to usurp the throne as the new Queen of Avalor and inflict her tyrannical rule over the kingdom. In an attempt to protect her, Elena distracted Shuriki while Alacazar casted a spell to place Isabel and her grandparents in an enchanted painting for their protection. It succeeded, but Elena was imprisoned in the Amulet of Avalor when Shuriki tried to kill her as well, and Shuriki was able to take over Avalor with Esteban as her Chancellor as the rest of the Royal Family were trapped or presumed dead.
41 years later, Alacazar's grandson, Mateo, casts the spell to free Isabel and her grandparents from the painting, allowing them to reunite with Elena, who had been freed from the Amulet by Sofia, Princess of Enchancia and owner of the Amulet now. Aided by Sofia's family of King Roland II, Queen Miranda, Prince James, Princess Amber, and the citizens of Avalor City, Elena defeats Shuriki, destroys her wand, and reclaims Avalor, assuming the throne as Crown Princess in her late parents' stead and also allowing Isabel to reclaim her position as Princess and heiress to the throne as well, giving Enchancia a valuable new ally in Avalor under Elena.
Elena of Avalor
Following Elena reclaiming the throne from Shuriki and becoming Crown Princess until she comes of age to be named Queen in a few years, which would then make Isabel the Crown Princess as the younger sister and next in line for the throne as the second daughter and succeeding heiress, Isabel spends her time creating new inventions to help out her family, the Jaquins, or the people of Avalor City, even if it causes her to get into trouble sometimes because of them, especially with Esteban, but she always manages to make amends afterwards. However, she is not immune to being a victim of the actions of some of the villains that Elena deals with early on into her reign as Crown Princess, such as being turned into a stone statue by Alacazar's arch-enemy Fiero, or held hostage by the moth fairy Orizaba, only to be rescued by Elena, Mateo, Gabe, and Naomi before her fate becomes irreversible.
When the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebration rolls around, Isabel is hesitant to go see the memorial set up for King Raul and Queen Lucia at the cemetery, as she missed them too much, and used the lie that her costume was damaged to avoid it, but with some encouragement from Elena about how important it was for her to pay her respects to their fallen parents, she is able to still attend the celebration and pay her respects to her fallen Mom and Dad alongside her elder sister and grandparents, unaware that Elena, able to see spirits due to the magic she inherited from being stuck in the Amulet of Avalor for so long, saw their parents watching over them from the afterlife with proud smiles on their faces, knowing Avalor is in good hands with their daughters. She also plans ahead for an impending solar eclipse so no one will damage their eyesight when watching it, but is caught off-guard when it is invaded by Orizaba the Moth Fairy from the Spirit World, who later takes Isabel hostage to try and protect herself from Elena upon realizing that Elena's Scepter of Light is her weakness. Elena is able to banish her back to the Spirit World while saving Isabel as well, refusing to let her little sister be threatened like that by someone evil like Orizaba, but exhausts herself in the process, causing Isabel to be fearful of losing her big sister after losing their parents, but Elena assures Isabel that she'll be alright before passing out and not waking up for two days as she recovers, leaving Isabel relieved when Elena awakens, fully recovered and unharmed, back in her bed in the palace and reveals the magic she gained from her time in the Amulet of Avalor before Sofia freed her. However, she is unaware that Shuriki survived, and having allied with former allies in Victor and Carla Delgado, is planning revenge against Elena and the Jaquins, with her ultimate goal being Isabel and Elena's late mother, Queen Lucia's, Carnaval Tiara as Shuriki can use the jewel in it to forge a new wand to replace the one Elena snapped in half previously to restore her powers and launch a second coup against Elena, Isabel, their family, and the Jaquins to become Queen of Avalor again and rule the kingdom once more with an iron fist as she had done for over 40 years before Elena took back the kingdom.
Unaware of that at first, Isabel enrolls in a local Avalor public school to make up for being home schooled for some time after being freed from the enchanted painting, meets some new friends around her age in her classmates, such as Christina, and even takes part in the annual Avalor Science Fair, earning her a chance to meet her idol, Professor Ochoa, and be enrolled in the Avalor Science Academy for a class once a week with Ochoa as well when she is declared the winner, allowing her to put her smarts to use with inventing new ideas that would impress Ochoa, though her first attempt to impress the professor is sabotaged by a jealous rival student, but her second attempt proves successful, and the saboteur exposes himself by accident and is punished by Ochoa with suspension from any further projects.
Isabel has not been told yet of Shuriki's return by Elena, Esteban, her grandparents, Mateo, Armando, or anyone, but presumably had been at some point following the Sunflower Festival, after Elena encountered Shuriki again personally and fought her off with Naomi, Gabe, and Mateo's help, which she makes clear later on when Elena begins her training with the Scepter of Light to counter Shuriki's new Scepter of Night, worrying Isabel with Elena being gone constantly to be prepared for battling Shuriki in the future to prevent Shuriki from attempting another coup to take over Avalor again from Elena, Isabel, their grandparents, their friends, and the citizens, so she entrusts her bracelet to Elena for good luck, hoping it will help Elena out. She later begins her weekly classes with Ochoa at the Science Academy, but nearly gives up due to sabotage from an egotistical student, only to turn things around and be satisfied when the student exposes himself and is punished by Ochoa for his behavior with being suspended from the Academy until further notice, much to the student's anger and humility. Isabel continues her studies at the Academy without further problems. She also becomes the best of friends with Migs' new cubs, Mingo, Zoom, and Estrella, along with Migs' mate and the cubs' mother, Dulce.
Isabel later goes with Elena and the rest of her family to Nueva Vista to visit their cousin Duke Cristobal while on summer vacation away from Avalor City, only to later find herself face-to-face with Shuriki, Fiero, the Delgados, and Jaquin siblings Cruz and Vestia upon returning to the palace there, before being taken to be imprisoned in the tower prison. She is later rescued by Naomi, Gabe, and Mateo on Migs, Luna, and Skylar, and tries to flee Nueva Vista on the Royal Yacht to return home to Avalor City, only to be stopped by Shuriki when she damages the main mast while pursuing them on the Duke's ship. When she and her grandparents return to Nueva Vista shortly thereafter, she learns that Elena has defeated Shuriki for good, meaning that her parents' murder has been finally avenged and they can rest in peace. She continues to enjoy her summer vacation in Nueva Vista after that with Elena, Esteban, Francisco, and Luisa, even celebrating her first Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in Nueva Vista as well, and befriending the Sirenas, including their crown prince and princess, Marzel and Marisa, and their parents, King Pescoro and Queen Camila.
Back home in Avalor City, she celebrates another Navidad with her family, along with taking gifts to her classmate Christina with her grandparents escorting her, before returning home to celebrate with her family, Naomi's, and Mateo's mother Rafa, together as one big family. She continues to be with her big sister and her grandparents when dealing with issues either in Avalor City or Nueva Vista, offering Elena support with Elena doing the same for her. It is presumed that she learns of the return of Carla's mother Ash and the threat she now poses to her big sister and Avalor as a much more powerful malvago compared to Fiero.
After she graduates from college, she decides to aid Elena in her search for Ash and Carla Delgado. Though she saves Elena at one point when she was in danger with her inventions, and it is enough to convince Elena to allow Isabel to join her group alongside Naomi, Gabe, and Mateo, it is not without Elena still punishing Isabel for disobeying Elena's orders.
Later, it is time to celebrate Carnaval again, but after Elena returns from capturing Ash Delgado, she brings the float Isabel was working on to life due to her new magical powers from the Well of Crystals, much to Isabel's amazement, naming it "Flo", short for "Float". However, Isabel soon discovers, much to her horror and deep sadness, Esteban's role in Shuriki's original takeover, and is devastated and heartbroken to learn of her cousin betraying them, even when he tells them he made a promise to Shuriki that the family would be unharmed, only for her to renege on the deal and kill Raul and Lucia. Isabel fully supports Elena having Esteban imprisoned and later banished from Avalor to Soledad Island for the rest of his life for his actions that led to the deaths of her and Elena's mother and father and Shuriki taking over Avalor, as she was crushed to learn her own cousin caused her parents to be murdered while she was still just a child, and agrees with Elena to strip Esteban of his position as Chancellor of Avalor and exile him for high treason against their family and kingdom.
Isabel later has to take charge when a mysterious guitar-playing thief named Tito enters Avalor and manages to entrance Elena, Naomi, Gabe, and Mateo, leaving it up to Isabel to call upon her classmates to break the spell with a plan inspired all on her own and not from what she's seen with Elena. Though Isabel succeeds in breaking the spell on Elena and the others by destroying Tito's guitar, Francisco and Luisa return, and Francisco takes the guitar to be fixed, much to Elena and Isabel's horror.
Isabel later assists her big sister and grandparents with celebrating the holiday of Hanukkah with a royal family they rescued from their sinking ship while en route home to their own kingdom for the holiday, allowing them to learn about said holiday and many of the traditions that come with it.
Isabel later rejoins her classmate from Professor Ochoa's class, Tomiko, as they work with Elena to repair the observatory telescope after it was damaged by a storm so Elena and Isabel's grandfather can see a rare comet he had been longing to see when he mentioned it to them some time prior.
As time goes on, Isabel soon is summoned with Elena to meet with Quita Moz, who reveals he had been given a vision in the sacred fire of Isabel on the throne due to her status as heiress after Elena, which could be a bad omen for Elena regarding her test to become Queen having finally arrived. Concerned and unnerved about the vision, Isabel is sent by Quita Moz with Elena to recover the Heart of the Jaguar to help build up her self-confidence. During the journey, Elena is turned into a baby Jaquin cub, which allows her to help Isabel recover what the Jaguar King wanted. However, when he refuses the trade for it in return for returning Elena to normal when Isabel makes the offer, he sends Isabel through a trap door and into her Exergroomer to trap her there. With the support of her class guinea pigs, Peaches and Paco, Isabel escapes, and impressed by her courage with escaping her own invention, and standing up to him and demanding he return Elena to normal at once, with Isabel confidently declaring she's the next Crown Princess of Avalor with Elena set to become Queen soon, the Jaguar King changes his mind, upholds his end of the trade, and returns Elena to normal before the Royal Sisters return to Quita Moz, who reveals that Isabel had the courage inside her all along. She just had to believe in herself. She was now ready for any future endeavors she would have to handle to protect Avalor personally if Elena was unavailable to face them herself.
Isabel soon has to put her newfound courage to the test in the series finale when Elena leaves to protect Nueva Vista and Coronado from Ash and Esteban as they seek to enlist the aid of the Four Shades of Awesome to conquer Avalor with after all their previous plans failed, only to find Esteban about to attack Avalor with the Shades himself, and Elena unavailable to lead the defense herself since she hadn't returned yet from Nueva Vista, as far as Isabel knew. Unknown to Isabel, Elena and Ash had ended up in the Spirit World, and Elena was being supported by their late parents to beat Ash in an Olaball match to see who would be returned to Avalor, and who would remain permanently in the Spirit World. As heir to the throne and Crown Princess once Elena becomes Queen, and now understanding the vision she saw with Quita Moz when she visited him with Elena in the previous episode, Isabel rallies the defense of Avalor against the Four Shades, including help from Ixlan, Victor and Carla Delgado, her grandparents, Gabe and the Royal Guard, Armando, and the Jaquins, but only succeeds in sending one, Hetz, back to the Spirit World by turning his own powers of lightning back on him before being overwhelmed by the other three in Vuli, Yolo, and Cahu, breaking through her defenses, forcing her back. Elena returns with Quita Moz, King Verago, and reinforcements from Vallestrella, but after sending two more of the Shades back to the Spirit World in Vuli and Yolo, Elena then has to deal with Cahu the Time Shade, the most powerful and dangerous of the Four Shades. Elena has Naomi get Isabel to safety before they can be turned into fossilized stone tablets and killed like Cahu's other victims, including Gabe and Mateo, which Elena, Isabel, and Naomi witnessed firsthand, while Elena draws Cahu's attention with Skylar, luring her away as a decoy. Naomi and Isabel safely escape with their lives, but when Cahu tries to turn Elena to stone after cornering her following turning Skylar to stone and slowing time on Elena to prevent her from dodging the attack after disarming her of the Scepter of Light, Esteban, despite knowing how much Elena hates him for what happened with Shuriki during her original takeover, sacrifices himself to take the bullet for her. Heartbroken over Esteban's sacrifice, despite her hatred against him for allying with Shuriki and getting Raul and Lucia killed by her during Shuriki's original takeover, and realizing this is all her fault for letting her anger lead to this, Elena forgives her cousin for his crimes, causing her magic to revive Esteban to flesh and blood. Together, they destroy Cahu's hourglass, stripping her of her powers, and banish her back to the Spirit World with the other Shades, and Elena's newly-awoken emotion magic from forgiving Esteban undoes all their damage to Avalor, including whatever they cast on Francisco, Luisa, Gabe, Mateo, Armando, the Delgados, and anyone else in Avalor City, with Naomi and Isabel relieved when Gabe and Mateo are returned to normal unharmed. After Quita Moz declares that Elena passed her test, which was forgiving Esteban for his past crimes, thus ensuring her ascension to the throne, Elena's coronation goes on as planned, but before she is crowned Queen by her grandfather Francisco, Elena welcomes one last group of guests to her coronation with open arms upon seeing they made it just in time: Sofia the First and the Royal Family of Enchancia, with Sofia and her step-siblings having grown into teenagers in the few years since they helped Elena reclaim the throne from Shuriki. After Elena is crowned Queen of Avalor, she names Isabel as heiress to the throne, making her the new Crown Princess, and the new Royal Inventor. Isabel later shares a dance with Sofia's stepbrother Prince James during the celebration that followed Elena's coronation while Elena dances with Sofia, before Isabel joins Elena and the rest of their family as Elena strikes her victory pose to ring in her new reign as Queen of Avalor.
